A reader pointed out to me exactly what these "Candles" are.

In the book Jewish Magic and Superstition, Joshua Trachtenberg writes very convincingly that braided bread loaves in the Jewish tradition came from premedieval Germany.

Their origin is actually in Germanic pagan cultic practices. When ancient German tribes developed and eventually moved away from actual child sacrifices to their pagan gods, they burned the braided hair of young virgins that they cut off when they reached the age of menstruation as a substitute for the young girls themselves.

Eventually over time, instead of actually burning the hair of these girls, they instead offered bread that had been baked in the shape of braided hair.

After they eventually stopped even offering these braided loaves of bread as sacrifices to their gods or perhaps with the advent of Christianity.

So, if they aren't offering it, why make it?
